Geneva, May 20 (NQA) – The United Nations announced today that it has obtained approval from Israeli authorities to allow approximately 100 additional humanitarian aid trucks into Gaza.

Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), stated at a Geneva press conference, “We requested and received approval for more trucks today, much more than what was approved yesterday.” He noted that the trucks include food and nutritional supplies for children and infants.

Laerke emphasized that the next step is the actual receipt and distribution of the aid within Gaza.

During the same briefing, Akihiro Seita, Director of Health at the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), warned that malnutrition levels in Gaza have been rising due to the ongoing blockade and could worsen dramatically if food shortages continue.

“I have data up to the end of April showing an increase in malnutrition. So the concern is that if the current food shortages continue, it will get steadily worse and then get out of our control,” Seita said.
